National Car Care Month

April 6, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

National Car Care Month

If you haven’t already heard, you might find it interesting to know that April is National Car Care Month. Manufacturers, and dealerships alike, want you to know that there are many proactive measures you can take to ensure the quality of life for your automobile. Here, I will briefly break down some of the simple actions you can take that will give you piece of mind on how your car is holding up.

1.       Oil: Check your oil, as it is the lifeblood of your car. Make sure you are within your mileage and that it is “clean” and at the proper fill level.
2.       Spark Plugs: Check your spark plugs.  You don’t have to be a mechanic to do this. Simply remove one, and check for grime and buildup. You’ll know if they need to be replaced.
3.       Air Filter: The air filter is something that’s often overlooked, and should be checked every time you change your oil. Pure, clean air results in a smoother running vehicle.
4.       Battery: Your car battery is often overlooked, as well. Check and make sure it is held in place properly and that it’s not bouncing around under the hood. Also make sure your positive and negative terminals are clean, and allow for proper contact.
5.       Windshield fluid: This will not affect the performance of your vehicle, but will enable you to clean your windshield, should the opportunity present itself.  Having a clear field of vision is crucial to your driving experience.
6.       Tire pressure: Having properly inflated tires will allow you to get the optimum fuel economy. The specific amount of tire pressure can be located on the inside of your driver’s side door jams.
7.       Car idle: If your vehicle is idling too high or too low, it’s a sign that you should bring it in and have it looked at. It can range from something simple to complex mechanical issues. If this is the case, have your service team take a look.
8.       External inspection: This is simple. Take a walk around your car and take a peak underneath, and see what’s going on. You’ll want to look for anything out of the ordinary, including: leaks, dents, cracked lenses, or anything hanging loose.
9.       Gas Mileage: Calculate to see how much you are getting out of a full tank. Fill up and do the math. Then compare it to what you should be getting out of your car. Find your car here: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm

If you follow these simple guidelines, you’ll be off to a good start on properly taking care of your automobile. Should there be any abnormalities, you might want to bring it in and have it serviced. World Volkswagen is celebrating National Car Care Month by allowing you to bring your car into their service department, where they will give you a free diagnostic inspection if your check engine light is on. So, have no worries, because they’ll let you know what is going on under the hood.
