Katy Perry and Volkswagen cause a stir in the Heart of Times Square

The closing of New York City's Times Square to traffic on Broadway took a new high yesterday (6/16) as Volkswagen launched the new 2011 Volkswagen Jetta. Transforming Duffy Square into an ‘urban oasis’. The TKTS booth was remade into a lawn and beach area, while further down cars were surrounded by water.

Several of the large video displays in Times Square were used to full advantage as the unveiling was followed by a free performance from Katy Perry. Excited teens were thrilled as were those who are gourmet aficionados as Chef Mario Batali preformed a cooking demonstration.

This was great PR for Katy Perry’s new video for "California Gurls." Performing a handful of tunes Katy Perry, hopped on top of the vehicle's hood in the middle of her short set. The performance was highlighted by her run through "California Gurls," the first single from her forthcoming album Teenage Dream (due in stores on August 24).

The new 2011 Volkswagen Jetta follows VW’s trend of offering high quality design and function at an affordable price. Sporty, fuel-efficient all for the base price of $16,000.

Wow, today must be the day for marginally interesting Web-launch teasers. I don’t think anyone outside of Volkswagen’s factories and offices are counting down to the new Jetta, but in case you’re wondering, you can check in with VW’s teaser website, which offers a countdown clock. At post time, there was just under five days and 22 hours left. The car will make its first official appearance next Tuesday at 11:25 a.m. EST.

Getting Your Vehicle Ready For Summer from ASE

Getting started -- The best planning guide is your owner's manual. Read it; and follow the manufacturer's recommended service schedules.
  • Air Conditioning
    - A marginally operating system will fail in hot weather. Have the
    system examined by a qualified technician.
  • Cooling System
    - The greatest cause of summer breakdowns is overheating. The cooling
    system should be completely flushed and refilled as recommended. The
    level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked
    periodically. (A 50/50 mix of anti-freeze and water is usually recommended.)
    IMPORTANT!, never remove the radiator cap until the engine has thoroughly
    cooled! The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses
    should be checked by a pro.
  • Oil
    - Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual --more
    often (every 3,000 miles or so) if you make frequent short jaunts,
    extended trips with lots of luggage, or tow a trailer.
  • Engine Performance
    - Replace other filters (air, fuel, PCV, etc.) as recommended-more
    often in dusty conditions. Get engine driveability problems (hard
    starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected
    at a good shop -- you'll get better gas mileage, too!.
  • Windshield Wipers
    - A dirty windshield causes eye fatigue and can pose a safety hazard.
    Replace worn blades and get plenty of windshield washer solvent.
  • Tires - Have your tires rotated about every 5,000 miles. Check tire
    pressures once a month; let the tires "cool down" first.
    Examine tires for tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the
    sidewalls for cuts and nicks. An alignment is warranted if there's
    uneven tread wear or if your vehicle pulls to one side.
    Don't forget your spare, and be sure the jack is in good condition.
  • Transmission
    - Prevent major repairs by having this important component serviced
    periodically.
  • Brakes
    - Brakes should be inspected as recommended in your manual, or sooner
    if you notice pulsations, grabbing, noises, or longer stopping distance.
    Minor brake problems should be corrected promptly.
  • Battery
    - Batteries can fail any time of year. The only accurate way to detect
    a weak battery is with professional equipment. Routine care: Scrape
    away corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces;
    re-tighten all connections. If battery caps are removable, check the
    fluid level monthly.

    Removal of cable can cause damage or loss of data/codes on some
    newer vehicles. Check your manual.

    Avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid. Wear eye
    protection and rubber gloves.
  • Lights
    - Inspect all lights and bulbs; replace burned out bulbs; periodically
    clean dirt and insects from all lenses.
    To prevent scratching, never use a dry rag.

  • Emergencies
    - Carry some basic tools-ask a technician for suggestions. Also include
    a first aid kit, flares, a flashlight, and a cell phone.
