Last week the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety released its list of the 2011 models that earned top marks in its safety tests. In all, the IIHS named 66 vehicles Top Safety Picks, including 40 cars, 25 SUVs and a minivan. That number is up considerably from last year's list, which was smaller than usual because of tougher IIHS test criteria, including a more stringent standard for crashworthiness in a rollover:
At the beginning of the 2010 model year, only 27 vehicles qualified for the award, but the number grew to 58 as auto manufacturers reworked existing designs and introduced new models. Now another 10 vehicles join the winners' list for 2011. Two discontinued models drop off.
"In just a year, automakers have more than doubled the number of vehicles that meet the criteria for Top Safety Pick," says Adrian Lund, the Institute's president. "That gives consumers shopping for a safer new car or SUV -- from economy to luxury models -- plenty of choices to consider in most dealer showrooms. In fact, every major automaker has at least one winning model this year."
The two automakers with the most qualifying models were Volkswagen and Hyundai, each of whom had nine Top Safety Picks.
But they were far from the only standouts. In fact, the number of qualifying models more than doubling between the 2010 and 2011 model year is a testament to the vibrancy of the global automotive industry, which has shown a remarkable capacity to adapt to some really difficult challenges within one or two model years on a pretty consistent basis.
That's in part, why I think high fuel economy standards are such a no-brainer -- the expertise and ingenuity within the industry are such that even the toughest mileage standards have little chance of getting between auto companies and their profits, thanks to the efforts of thousands of brilliant automotive engineers worldwide.
Another thing that stands out is the number of really affordable cars that got the nod. It wasn't so long ago that if you wanted a car that was really safe, you'd need to shop in the luxury car class. Now, entry-level cars like the Ford Fiesta and the Chevrolet Cruze are among the safest sold.

Volkswagen testing to "break the ice"
Tired of scraping ice off your windshield in the winter months? So too are the engineers at Volkswagen. Although automakers have tried a number of devices, including heated windshield water fluid, to remove frozen water from windscreens, VW’s new idea could prevent it from forming in the first place.
The solution may lie with a coating for the windshield itself. Developed in partnership with the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Technology, VW is testing a number of windshields treated with a thin layer of indium tin oxide. In theory, the coating reportedly prevents heat from radiating upwards, subsequently slowing or preventing the glass from cooling.
Does it work? Volkswagen claims the coating has prevented both fogging and ice formation at temperatures as low as 0 degrees Fahrenheit -- but the system isn’t exactly perfected. Thomas Drescher, an engineer within VW’s Development wing, notes there are a number of variables -- including cloudiness, relative humidity, and wind -- can affect the effectiveness of the tin treatment.
“The Low-E (low thermal emissivity) [may not] prevent ice formation or condensation entirely,” Drescher notes, “but it can significantly reduce the likelihood of it happening.”
While this research might change how we view winter driving, don’t expect to see this technology applied to vehicles within the next year or two. VW reports the metallic film is currently interfering with radio reception and other electronic devices, which would severely limit the design’s viability in a gadget-driven world. Still, VW pledges to tinker with the idea, and once it’s ready for prime time, the company plans on offering it to each of its group brands (i.e. VW, Seat, Audi, Porsche, Skoda, etc.)

2011 CC packs powerful yet polite punch!
The 2011 CC embodies the idea that function and form can successfully exist together in a car's design without sacrificing on practicality. With a starting price of $28,200, and available in six trim levels, the CC forges the comfort and capability of a sedan with the styling and driving experience that are normally only reserved for a coupe.
The CC touches ground on sculpted alloy wheels mated to Continental ContiSealTM allseason puncture-resistant tires. The Sport model employs the 17-inch ‘Phoenix' wheel design, while Lux models are equipped with 18-inch ‘Daytona' or ‘Interlagos' designs. The VR6 4MOTION model stands out with polished 18-inch ‘Interlagos' wheels. All wheel and tire combinations include a tire pressure monitoring system that alerts drivers to any potential low pressure conditions. Those seeking a more aggressive appearance can opt for the R-Line package, which includes lower body side trim, darkened tail lamps, standard fog lamps, stainless door sill plates, and head-turning 18-inch ‘Mallory' wheels. The R-Line package can be ordered with either 6- speed manual or automatic transmissions on the Sport trim level.
The CC Luxury and VR6 variants are built standard with Volkswagen's navigation systems that have a high resolution touch-screen displays, an SD memory card slot, an auxiliary input connection, and complimentary Sirius Real-Time Traffic programming.
Two engine options are available to power the CC wherever its driver commands: The 2.0-liter turbocharged and intercooled four-cylinder gasoline engine, or the 3.6-liter narrow angle V6 gasoline engine. The 2.0T in the CC Sport and Luxury models is sporty when called upon, but equally efficient, and combines four valves per cylinder, variable timing, dual overhead camshafts, and maintenance-free hydraulic lifters. Electronic TSI direct fuel injection and driveby- wire throttle control let the engine create 200 horsepower at 5,100 rpm, and 207 lbs.-ft. of torque between 1,800 and 5,000 rpm, while also offering great fuel economy.
Volkswagen's choice to include ESC standard on the CC and all other 2011 Volkswagen models, comes ahead of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) mandate that by the 2012 model year, all vehicles produced will need to include some form of Electronic Stability Control (ESC). According to NHTSA, having ESC in a vehicle results in 35 percent fewer single vehicle crashes and 30 percent fewer single-vehicle fatalities in passenger cars. Volkswagen's ESC compares the driver's intended course with the vehicle's actual direction. If a discrepancy is detected, ESC automatically brakes individual wheels and reduces engine power to help maintain directional control.

Pet Awareness Event
World Volkswagen and World Jeep Subaru have teamed up with the NJSPCA to host the most
pet-friendly events of the year in Monmouth County! They will host on site pet adoptions, pet ID tagging, and more! Pet ID tagging is the easiest way of ensuring your pet’s safe return. If your pet runs away or is somehow lost the tag is the go-to for people to get that pet back where it belongs. Without proper tagging the animals have a much lower chance of being returned to their rightful owners. While ID tagging is very quick and easy to do it is often overlooked. It’s not every day a person’s pet runs away or gets lost, so pet owners don’t think about the repercussions of improper ID tagging.Pet adoptions will be made possible through the Associated Humane Society on Shafto Road in Tinton Falls. The AHS, founded in 1906, is the largest animal sheltering system in New Jersey. The Society prides itself on their devotion to the thousands of animals they care for
annually and the chance for a better life they offer them. By hosting on-site pet adoptions World Volkswagen and World Jeep Subaru are hoping to find some of these great animals the loving homes they deserve.

World Volkswagen to be an Official Drop off for the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties
PRLog (Press Release) – Oct 29, 2010 – For the second year in a row , you can drop off your non-perishable food items at World Volkswagen in Neptune , New Jersey. Located at 4075 Route 33, just west of the Garden State Parkway, the seller of Jettas and CC's and others, recognizes the needs of others in these tough times. Gino Dellomo, General Sales Manager of the dealership and a long-time resident in the area says, " at no time is it more important than now to help those less fortunate than ourselves. World Volkswagen is committed to this community and its people."
The FoodBank began in 1984 when three people saw hunger at the Jersey shore and decided to make a difference. They purchased a small, dilapidated warehouse in Spring Lake. Carpenters, masons and other members of the community donated work, office furniture and supplies. Food streamed in from hundreds of donors. After one year, the FoodBank was serving 25 charities with 100,000 pounds of food.
Ten years later, nearly two million pounds of food was being distributed annually from the same small warehouse. Bursting at the seams, the FoodBank undertook a capital campaign in 1998 to construct a new facility in Neptune. Three years later, the current 40,000 sq. ft facility became a reality.
Today, the FoodBank serves over 270 pantries, soup kitchens and other feeding programs with over 5 million pounds of food annually.

Does Volkswagen have the right forumula for F1 racing?
According to the latest, Volkswagen motorsport chief Hans-Joachim Stuck - a former grand prix driver and Le Mans winner himself - has indicated that the growing automotive empire will make a decision by the end of the year (likely in November) on whether it will enter the Formula One World Championship in 2013.
If and when it does, VW AG could label its program under any of its brands. Audi was initially tipped to be the favorite, but with its Le Mans program already dominating, recent reports indicate that Porsche could get the nod for a come-back, having supplied TAG-branded engines to McLaren in the '80s. Volkswagen's own roundel could alternatively be tasked, but other group subsidiaries seem unlikely.
The decision will likely be linked to the direction that the series will take in terms of future engine development. The company could, meanwhile, opt to buy out an existing team - Sauber, HRT and Toro Rosso are said to be on the market - or team up with an existing one (like Williams) to enter the sport.

Rapleaf is selling your identity
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Rapleaf knows your name, your age and where you live. It knows your e-mail address, your income and what social networks you use. It knows your likes and dislikes. And it makes money by selling much of that personal information to advertisers.
Of course, Rapleaf is far from the only company that does this. Acxiom, ChoicePoint, Quantcast, and BluKai also collect and sell your data, as do many others. Google (GOOG, Fortune 500), Facebook and other Web companies also gather data about you in an attempt to target very personal ads.

2011 Volkswagen Jetta Sedan receives ‘Car of the Month’ award
Amongst many vehicle redesigns and reinventions this year comes the long-awaited 2011 Volkswagen Jetta Sedan. With a complete makeover inside and out, more power behind the pedal, and much needed improvements in size, safety and technology, the 2011 Jetta Sedan sets the bar for its class, making it NADAguides’ October Car of the Month.
“When we say or hear Volkswagen, first thought is: German,” says Don Christy, Jr. President of NADAguides. “But, with the 2011 Jetta Sedan, it’s pretty clear that Volkswagen is speaking to the North American consumer. Volkswagen adjusted the exterior design to closely resemble that of its popular and successful sibling, the Passat. They have also made an affordable sedan even more affordable by setting the base price at $15,995.”
The 2011 Jetta Sedan is available with four engine options, all of which come standard with manual transmission, including the 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel, which drives quiet and smooth but has sports car like power. Automatic transmissions will be available as options and the 2.0L TDI and TSI will additionally have a 6-speed DSG option. If it weren’t for the VW emblem sitting on the subtle grill, the dramatic exterior changes make the Jetta almost unrecognizable. Volkswagen has eliminated most of the “in your face” features like the bold, chrome grill, big round head and tail lights and replaced them with a more dominant bumper, and sleek narrow lights. The wheelbase and overall vehicle length has been increased, resulting in almost 3 extra inches of legroom — something the Jetta really needed. At first glance, this is a noticeable change from the short, round design to the new long and slender look that the 2011 Jetta Sedan is flaunting.
As for the interior, it’s not just the legroom that has improved. Volkswagen has stepped up drastically in the design and technology aspects with a clean, simple look and feel; one that is very satisfying to all needs. With features like Bluetooth and GPS navigation, smooth leather and an ergonomic steering wheel with convenient controls to help keep your eyes on the road, the Jetta provides a luxurious driving experience. The base model comes with standard features such as exterior temperature display, auxiliary input jack and power locks. Take it up a notch to the SE and SEL trims with the premium sound system, navigation, sunroof, Bluetooth and iPod connection. Volkswagen has created a very luxurious interior for a very affordable sedan; it’s almost too good to be true. The rear bench now splits 40/60 and folds, providing more versatility and convenience for cargo space. As far as safety is concerned, Volkswagen has it covered with two front airbags, two side airbags and two thorax airbags.
The 2011 Volkswagen Jetta starts at a very affordable $15,995 for the base trim and goes up to $25,295 for the DSG TDI model which comes fully loaded with Navigation, sunroof, heated power seats and power mirrors.

2011 Jetta packs big punch for little price!
The buzz on the street this fall is how Volkswagen has rolled back the base price of its 2011 Jetta a whopping $6,300 to $15,875.
What gives?
The 2011 is the sixth generation of the Jetta, a popular sedan that first came to our shores in 1980. The Jetta is a nice car but one that, over the years, has seen its base price creep up to $22,175. At that price, few buyers were comparing it to fast-selling compact entry-level sedans such as the $15,460 Toyota Corolla or $15,990 Honda Civic (2010 prices).
What's the catch?
The major differences most people will notice include a smaller, two-litre engine (more on that later), 15-inch steel wheels, rear drum brakes, no air conditioning, no power outside mirrors, no heated seats or keyless remote. Other nice-to-have items missing include cruise control, front centre arm-rest, alloy wheels, illuminated vanity mirrors, interior chrome, ski-sack, front reading lights, power and heated outside mirrors, etc.
What's included?
Anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, single-CD radio, auxiliary input, power windows and door locks. Heated front seats, heated washer nozzles, engine block heater and fog lights are the only options on the base car.
What's to like?
The base Jetta is still based on a new, revised platform, one that increases rear legroom. The front seat goes back so far I am sure pro basketball players will find them comfortable. It comes with express up and down for all the windows, power door locks and a remote trunk release on the driver's door. Because the trunk lid is fitted with springs, it pops open like a jack-in-the-box . Both front seats can be adjusted for height.
What's under the hood?
One five-cylinder and two four-cylinder engines power the Jetta. Two gas engines -- a four-cylinder two-litre and a five-cylinder 2.5-litre. A turbocharged, direct-injection 140-h.p. two-litre diesel will be available later this year.
The base two-litre four can only muster 115 h.p. and 125 lb.-ft. of torque but seems right at home in the Jetta. Its not a barn burner but it feels like it is comfortable pushing around 1,289 kilograms of car. But that's with one person on board. People who routinely carry passengers and cargo up the Malahat may want to test-drive the Jetta loaded up.
The manual transmission is slick and I would rate it among the best on the market. People who have driven a Volkswagen in the last 20 years will recognize and appreciate its smoothness. The clutch is almost effortless. This is why Europeans prefer manual transmissions.
Along with anti-lock brakes all Jettas come with stability control, electronic brake pressure distribution , six airbags -- although rear side airbags are still optional. What's worth taking note about is what VW calls its intelligent crash response system. In a severe collision this system will unlock doors, disconnect the battery terminal, shut the fuel supply, shut off high-consumption electrical components and automatically turn on the hazard lights. This system has previously only been found on more expensive cars, so it is refreshing it has found its way to a sub-$16,000 vehicle.
With the 2011 Jetta, Volkswagen is looking to bring the battle to Honda, Toyota and Hyundai. By using the popular Jetta to go head-to-head with them, VW hopes to win converts to the German marque. Unlike most gambles, this one looks like a sure-fire win for consumers -- as long as they don't load up their bargain-basement Jettas with options. It will be interesting to see how many consumers will say guten Tag to a Volkswagen and Sayonara to the competition in the near future.

Volkswagen in Nascar?
Toyota made waves when it entered NASCAR in 2007, marking the first time a foreign automaker entered the stock car racing series. It won't, however, be the last -- we hear Volkswagen's interested in dipping its giant corporate toes into the waters.
The news of Volkswagen's possible venture into NASCAR comes from none other than newly appointed Porsche CEO Matthias Müller. Müller told Motor Trend at the Paris Motor Show that Volkswagen, now in charge of Porsche, is "seriously considering" a NASCAR entry. Official discussion between VW and NASCAR officials will likely begin once the current season ends in November.
A Volkswagen NASCAR entry makes more sense than you'd initially think. The German auto giant has a new factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where it will build its New Midsize Sedan, which would be the likely NASCAR cup car candidate. The sedan was reportedly designed specifically with Americans' tastes in mind, and fielding a NASCAR entry based on the car would be a good way to drum up publicity for the new sedan.
Motor Trend says VW is considering is working with Roger Penske's NASCAR team, which is currently linked to Dodge. Penske has a history of success in the series (and virtually every race series): Penske driver Kurt Busch currently sits in fourth place in the standings, and as such, has secured a place in the Chase for the Cup.
We're interested in seeing NASCAR further expand its horizons, but we wonder how fans will react to yet another non-domestic company entering a sport long associated with American motorsports. What say you -- would you like to see VW join the NASCAR circus?

Volkswagen sheds light where others don't
Volkswagen Group Research staff members work together with the Development departments from the Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda brands as well as scientists from the Institute of Computer Graphics at the TU Braunschweig. Determining the psychological effect of light on the driver is part of the basic research. This knowledge is incorporated in the development of a simulation tool for virtual night driving, which is able to portray realistically how, among other things, oncoming traffic is blinded by headlights. New light functions are then implemented in test vehicles as a prototype for the road tests.
Prof. Dr Jürgen Leohold, Head of Volkswagen Group Research, commented that “the vision behind these activities is to fully achieve adaptive light distribution, which will in future automatically adjust to all driving situations and eventualities, thus continually ensuring optimum vision and visibility in the vehicle. Our aim is to further sharpen the Volkswagen Group’s competitive edge in the area of innovative lighting technologies. We are currently developing our skills in this important and strategic field of research in order to allow the coming years to deliver more surprises”.
The lighting technology known as “headlight range control”, as well as the “dynamic light assist” which has been introduced in the Volkswagen Touareg, originated in Volkswagen Group Research.
By using the “dynamic light assist” around the world in the new Touareg and Phaeton vehicle models, Volkswagen features innovative lighting technology’s high-end solution. The “dynamic light assist” is an entirely new dynamic main beam control system. It makes it possible to drive with the main beam left on without blinding oncoming traffic or drivers ahead of you. A camera on the interior mirror detects the exact position of the other road users; the masking function in each headlight is then separately activated electronically and the headlight main beams are slightly dimmed for the relevant area. As a result, the road illumination in general is improved. The “dynamic light assist” provides the means for a completely new feel for light, always optimally matched to the traffic situation.
Isn't science grand?

VW Donates 4 Jetta Sport Wagons to Law Enforcement
With the County Commission’s blessing and appreciation, Volkswagen of America has added a double case of “fahrvergneugen” (German for the joy of driving) to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department. It is reported that during Thursday morning’s commission meeting the commissioners voted unanimously to authorize County Mayor Claude Ramsey to accept two Jetta station wagons from the one of the county’s newest residents. The vehicles will be assigned to traffic enforcement and, according to Mayor Ramsey, should maintain a high profile on the roads throughout the area.
Volkswagen also donated two of the vehicles to the Chattanooga Police Department, which are valued at $28,000 each.

Volkswagen to Debut Hybrid Beetle
Recently there's been some buzz around the Beetle that runs on poo, or "Dung Beetle" as some have dubbed it. Nifty idea, but hardly something the general public would get into as far as a greener vehicle option. No worries, Volkswagen has been stirring it's environmentally friendly pot and came up with a more sterile solution: a hybrid Beetle!!
Autocar reports that VW is planning a "radical design" for the next-generation bug, set to debut at next year's Detroit auto show. The redesign will include a hybrid Beetle with a drivetrain resembling what was seen on the New Compact Coupe concept at this year's Detroit show--a lithium-ion battery pack, 20 kilowatt electric motor with a li-ion battery pack, 177 horsepower, 110 pound-feet of torque, and an average of 45 miles per gallon. The hybrid Beetle may not match those numbers exactly, but chances are it will come close.
The Beetle isn't the only upcoming electric option from VW. Aside from the already-unveiled hybrid Touareg, VW plans to release a hybrid Jetta in 2012 as well as an all-electric Golf in 2013. For the most part, though, VW is sticking with the clean diesel vehicles that it knows best.

Report: Volkswagen Gives the Green Light to a BlueSport Roadster
The Eos isn't Volkswagen's most popular model, but a meaner, performance-oriented droptop may be just what its consumers are looking for. A new report suggests the BlueSport roadster has been given the ok for production.
First seen at the 2009 North American International Auto Show, the BlueSport was depicted by VW as the comeback of the compact roadster. Sources at Auto Express have received confirmation from VW that the two-door sportster is indeed in the final stages of development and has been given the go-ahead for production. According to the source, designers haven't strayed from the concept's muscular look.
As it name suggests, the BlueSport will follow VW's trend of offering eco-friendly technologies. The car will likely feature stop/start technology along with regenerative braking. VW installed its 180-horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine in the rear-drive roadster concept; its combination of frugality (55 mpg) and rapidity (0 to 60 in 6.2 seconds) dispelled myths that diesels have to be slow. When the production convertible premieres, we expect a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 gasoline engine, followed shortly after by a 1.4-liter twin-charged I-4.
Similar to what we saw some 18 months ago, the BlueSport borrows some styling trends from other VW offerings, namely the Scirocco and Golf, but a set of LED foglights and wide stance remind us of the Audi R8. To keep the car light, VW is poised to offer a manually operated folding cloth roof. In addition, an ultralight aluminum chassis will be used to help keep weight to near 2600 pounds.
We expect to see the BlueSport on our lot sometime between 2012 and 2013, with pricing presumed to start around $30,000.

Katy Perry and Volkswagen cause a stir in the Heart of Times Square
The closing of New York City's Times Square to traffic on Broadway took a new high yesterday (6/16) as Volkswagen launched the new 2011 Volkswagen Jetta. Transforming Duffy Square into an ‘urban oasis’. The TKTS booth was remade into a lawn and beach area, while further down cars were surrounded by water.
Several of the large video displays in Times Square were used to full advantage as the unveiling was followed by a free performance from Katy Perry. Excited teens were thrilled as were those who are gourmet aficionados as Chef Mario Batali preformed a cooking demonstration.
This was great PR for Katy Perry’s new video for "California Gurls." Performing a handful of tunes Katy Perry, hopped on top of the vehicle's hood in the middle of her short set. The performance was highlighted by her run through "California Gurls," the first single from her forthcoming album Teenage Dream (due in stores on August 24).
The new 2011 Volkswagen Jetta follows VW’s trend of offering high quality design and function at an affordable price. Sporty, fuel-efficient all for the base price of $16,000.

Volkswagen Launches Teaser Website for 2011 VW Jetta
Wednesday, June 9, 2010 2:42PM - By Chris Weiss
Wow, today must be the day for marginally interesting Web-launch teasers. I don’t think anyone outside of Volkswagen’s factories and offices are counting down to the new Jetta, but in case you’re wondering, you can check in with VW’s teaser website, which offers a countdown clock. At post time, there was just under five days and 22 hours left. The car will make its first official appearance next Tuesday at 11:25 a.m. EST.

Getting Your Vehicle Ready For Summer from ASE
Getting started -- The best planning guide is your owner's manual. Read it; and follow the manufacturer's recommended service schedules.

A Word About ASE Perhaps years ago, a shady-tree mechanic whose only credentials were a tool box and busted knuckles was enough. But today's high-tech vehicles need more... and today's quality-conscious consumers demand more. The independent, non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) conducts the only industry-wide, national certification program for automotive technicians. Consumers benefit from ASE's certification program since it takes much of the guess-work out of finding a competent technician. ASE certifies the competency of individual technicians through a series of standardized specialty exams (brakes, transmissions, engine repair, etc.) Certified technicians are issued pocket credentials listing their area(s) of expertise and usually wear blue and white ASE shoulder insignia, while their employers often post the ASE sign on the premises. There are more than 400,000 ASE-certified professionals at work in every type of repair facility. ASE: Certifying the Automotive Professional |

Google Street View Cars Spied On Users' Wi-Fi
If you felt violated when the Google Street View car took a photo of your front lawn and posted it on Google Maps, you'd probably rather not know what it saw when it was intercepting data on your Wi-Fi network.
In a post Friday afternoon on its public policy blog, the company admitted that it had "mistakenly" collected not just the location and address data from public Wi-Fi networks, but also unsecured content flowing across those networks--information like what Web sites a user was visiting, what files he or she downloaded, or what videos the user watched.
Google has long collected Wi-Fi network location information to better triangulate the location of mobile users who don't have GPS enabled on their phones, instead using information about Wi-Fi signals the user is receiving. But the search giant admits that since 2007, it has also been collecting content data from unsecured networks, a result, it says, of accidentally implementing experimental code that a developer created in 2006.
Google says it only discovered that its cars were snooping on actual Wi-fi network content when it responded to a German privacy agency's request to audit the Wi-Fi data its cars had collected. It had previously responded to criticism in April with claims that it collected only location and address data, not actual content.
According to Google, those cars were "grounded" as soon as it discovered the problem and isolated their data to prevent its employees or outsiders from accessing it. "We want to delete this data as soon as possible, and are currently reaching out to regulators in the relevant countries about how to quickly dispose of it," Alan Eustace, a senior Google engineer, writes on Google's blog. The company says it's also working with a third party firm to review the software and the company's internal procedures to ensure similar violations don't occur in the future.
The admission, along with Google's earlier denials of the privacy violation, will likely send a shockwave through the movement of consumer advocates who already suspect that Google collects more information than it publicly admits. It may be used as fodder in the discussions around the controversial online advertising bill that was introduced earlier this month for public commentary.
"We are acutely aware that we failed badly here," Eustace adds. "We are profoundly sorry for this error and are determined to learn all the lessons we can from our mistake."
One lesson that we can all take from this still-unfolding scandal: Keep your Wi-Fi network password protected. Especially when a Volkswagen with an enormous camera rolls around the corner.

Volkswagen Workers Building Pre-series Midsized Sedan By Hand atChattanooga Plant
Volkswagen's Chattanooga workforce now numbers 500, with some of employees now actually building cars.
Workers in the body shop are currently building the pre-series version of the new midsized sedan by hand.
It will be a few months before they complete the first vehicle using German prototype parts. VW Chattanooga CEO Frank Fischer says "and now the next step is to take the supplier parts, the first parts coming from the suppliers and build the vehicles here so this is kind of an approval process, training process, debugging process whatever you call it in order to get more experience with the car and more experience with the factory."
Members of Volkswagen's Board of Directors traveled to Chattanooga to review the plant earlier this week. Fischer says they're pleased with the speed the plant is coming together.
Construction remains on track for a summer completion.

Honda, Volkswagen Named Best Small Value Cars
Consumer Reports in its list of the best cars of the 2010 names Honda Fit, Volkswagen Golf and Honda Civic EX as the top three best small cars for the value. The valuation of these small cars is ranked by a special score system. It also takes into consideration the predicted-reliability rating and the five-year owner cost of the below mentioned cars.
The average model value score is taken as 1. If the value score is above 1 that means the car is better than the average one. If the value score is 2.0, which in this case is Honda Fit, this means the car is twice the average value. Honda Fit with its $16,020 price tag tops the list of the best 2010 small cars for the value. It has a test score 2.0 which means it's twice better in terms of value than an average small car in the 5 year period. Cost per mile is $0.42. Overall test score of Honda Fit is 68.
Volkswagen Golf (2.5) comes second in Consumer Reports' list. It costs $20.314 and has the score is little bit below 2.0. The cost per mile is 0.51.

Volkswagen Polo Named World Car of the Year
European Subcompact Beats Mercedes E-Class and Toyota Prius at New York Auto Show
By AARON KATERSKY -ABC News
April 1, 2010 The VolkswagenPolo -- a vehicle unavailable in the United States -- was named World Car of the Year today. The announcement at the 2010 New York International Auto Show comes at a time when car makers are shifting their emphasis to small, fuel-efficient cars.
"The vehicle that we're seeing now is all about efficiency," said Charlie Vogelheim, executive editor of Intellichoice.com.
The Polo is Volkswagen's most popular subcompact. It's a small bubble of a car that follows a formula that has worked for the German manufacturer before.
"Good proportion, not complicated design, and last but not least, elegance," said Volkswagen's Walter de Silva.
