2011 Volkswagen Jetta Sedan receives ‘Car of the Month’ award

Amongst many vehicle redesigns and reinventions this year comes the long-awaited 2011 Volkswagen Jetta Sedan.  With a complete makeover inside and out, more power behind the pedal, and much needed improvements in size, safety and technology, the 2011 Jetta Sedan sets the bar for its class, making it NADAguides’ October Car of the Month.

“When we say or hear Volkswagen, first thought is: German,” says Don Christy, Jr. President of NADAguides. “But, with the 2011 Jetta Sedan, it’s pretty clear that Volkswagen is speaking to the North American consumer. Volkswagen adjusted the exterior design to closely resemble that of its popular and successful sibling, the Passat. They have also made an affordable sedan even more affordable by setting the base price at $15,995.”

The 2011 Jetta Sedan is available with four engine options, all of which come standard with manual transmission, including the 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel, which drives quiet and smooth but has sports car like power.  Automatic transmissions will be available as options and the 2.0L TDI and TSI will additionally have a 6-speed DSG option.  If it weren’t for the VW emblem sitting on the subtle grill, the dramatic exterior changes make the Jetta almost unrecognizable. Volkswagen has eliminated most of the “in your face” features like the bold, chrome grill, big round head and tail lights and replaced them with a more dominant bumper, and sleek narrow lights.   The wheelbase and overall vehicle length has been increased, resulting in almost 3 extra inches of legroom — something the Jetta really needed.  At first glance, this is a noticeable change from the short, round design to the new long and slender look that the 2011 Jetta Sedan is flaunting.

As for the interior, it’s not just the legroom that has improved. Volkswagen has stepped up drastically in the design and technology aspects with a clean, simple look and feel; one that is very satisfying to all needs.  With features like Bluetooth and GPS navigation, smooth leather and an ergonomic steering wheel with convenient controls to help keep your eyes on the road, the Jetta provides a luxurious driving experience.  The base model comes with standard features such as exterior temperature display, auxiliary input jack and power locks.  Take it up a notch to the SE and SEL trims with the premium sound system, navigation, sunroof, Bluetooth and iPod connection.  Volkswagen has created a very luxurious interior for a very affordable sedan; it’s almost too good to be true.  The rear bench now splits 40/60 and folds, providing more versatility and convenience for cargo space.  As far as safety is concerned, Volkswagen has it covered with two front airbags, two side airbags and two thorax airbags.

The 2011 Volkswagen Jetta starts at a very affordable $15,995 for the base trim and goes up to $25,295 for the DSG TDI model which comes fully loaded with Navigation, sunroof, heated power seats and power mirrors.

2011 Jetta packs big punch for little price!

The buzz on the street this fall is how Volkswagen has rolled back the base price of its 2011 Jetta a whopping $6,300 to $15,875.

What gives?

The 2011 is the sixth generation of the Jetta, a popular sedan that first came to our shores in 1980. The Jetta is a nice car but one that, over the years, has seen its base price creep up to $22,175. At that price, few buyers were comparing it to fast-selling compact entry-level sedans such as the $15,460 Toyota Corolla or $15,990 Honda Civic (2010 prices).

What's the catch?

The major differences most people will notice include a smaller, two-litre engine (more on that later), 15-inch steel wheels, rear drum brakes, no air conditioning, no power outside mirrors, no heated seats or keyless remote. Other nice-to-have items missing include cruise control, front centre arm-rest, alloy wheels, illuminated vanity mirrors, interior chrome, ski-sack, front reading lights, power and heated outside mirrors, etc.

What's included?

Anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, single-CD radio, auxiliary input, power windows and door locks. Heated front seats, heated washer nozzles, engine block heater and fog lights are the only options on the base car.

What's to like?

The base Jetta is still based on a new, revised platform, one that increases rear legroom. The front seat goes back so far I am sure pro basketball players will find them comfortable. It comes with express up and down for all the windows, power door locks and a remote trunk release on the driver's door. Because the trunk lid is fitted with springs, it pops open like a jack-in-the-box . Both front seats can be adjusted for height.

What's under the hood?

One five-cylinder and two four-cylinder engines power the Jetta. Two gas engines -- a four-cylinder two-litre and a five-cylinder 2.5-litre. A turbocharged, direct-injection 140-h.p. two-litre diesel will be available later this year.

The base two-litre four can only muster 115 h.p. and 125 lb.-ft. of torque but seems right at home in the Jetta. Its not a barn burner but it feels like it is comfortable pushing around 1,289 kilograms of car. But that's with one person on board. People who routinely carry passengers and cargo up the Malahat may want to test-drive the Jetta loaded up.

The manual transmission is slick and I would rate it among the best on the market. People who have driven a Volkswagen in the last 20 years will recognize and appreciate its smoothness. The clutch is almost effortless. This is why Europeans prefer manual transmissions.

Along with anti-lock brakes all Jettas come with stability control, electronic brake pressure distribution , six airbags -- although rear side airbags are still optional. What's worth taking note about is what VW calls its intelligent crash response system. In a severe collision this system will unlock doors, disconnect the battery terminal, shut the fuel supply, shut off high-consumption electrical components and automatically turn on the hazard lights. This system has previously only been found on more expensive cars, so it is refreshing it has found its way to a sub-$16,000 vehicle.

With the 2011 Jetta, Volkswagen is looking to bring the battle to Honda, Toyota and Hyundai. By using the popular Jetta to go head-to-head with them, VW hopes to win converts to the German marque. Unlike most gambles, this one looks like a sure-fire win for consumers -- as long as they don't load up their bargain-basement Jettas with options. It will be interesting to see how many consumers will say guten Tag to a Volkswagen and Sayonara to the competition in the near future.

Volkswagen in Nascar?

Toyota made waves when it entered NASCAR in 2007, marking the first time a foreign automaker entered the stock car racing series. It won't, however, be the last -- we hear Volkswagen's interested in dipping its giant corporate toes into the waters.

The news of Volkswagen's possible venture into NASCAR comes from none other than newly appointed Porsche CEO Matthias Müller. Müller told Motor Trend at the Paris Motor Show that Volkswagen, now in charge of Porsche, is "seriously considering" a NASCAR entry. Official discussion between VW and NASCAR officials will likely begin once the current season ends in November.

A Volkswagen NASCAR entry makes more sense than you'd initially think. The German auto giant has a new factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where it will build its New Midsize Sedan, which would be the likely NASCAR cup car candidate. The sedan was reportedly designed specifically with Americans' tastes in mind, and fielding a NASCAR entry based on the car would be a good way to drum up publicity for the new sedan.

Motor Trend says VW is considering is working with Roger Penske's NASCAR team, which is currently linked to Dodge. Penske has a history of success in the series (and virtually every race series): Penske driver Kurt Busch currently sits in fourth place in the standings, and as such, has secured a place in the Chase for the Cup.

We're interested in seeing NASCAR further expand its horizons, but we wonder how fans will react to yet another non-domestic company entering a sport long associated with American motorsports. What say you -- would you like to see VW join the NASCAR circus?

NTSHA Child Passenger Safety Week. Get Your Seats Checked at World VW!

During our 2010 CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY (CPS) WEEK, parents and caregivers are urged to verify that their child safety seats are properly installed and correctly used.

Did you know?
  • Crashes are the leading cause of death for children from 3 to 14 years old.
  • In 2008, there were nearly 61 million children age 14 and younger in the UnitedStates.
  • This age group made up 20 percent of the total U.S. resident population in 2008.
  • Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for ages 3 to 14 (based on 2006 figures, which are the latest mortality data currently available from the NationalCenter for Health Statistics).
  • In 2008, there were a total of 37,261 traffic fatalities in the United States. The 14-andyounger age group accounted for 4 percent (1,347) of those traffic fatalities. This age group accounted for 3 percent (968) of all vehicle occupant fatalities, 8 percent (193,000) of all the people injured in motor vehicle crashes, and 8 percent (168,000) of all the vehicle occupants injured in crashes. During 2008, fatalities in this age group (1,347) decreased 20 percent from the 1,680 fatalities in 2007.
  • Every day in the United States, an average of 4 children age 14 and younger were killed and 529 were injured in motor vehicle crashes during 2008.
  • In the 14-and-younger age group, males accounted for 60 percent of the fatalities and 48 percent of those injured in motor vehicle crashes during 2008.
  • An estimated 8,959 lives were saved by child restraints from 1975 to 2008. Among children under age 5, an estimated 244 lives were saved in 2008 by restraint use. Of these 244 lives saved, 219 were associated with the use of child safety seats and 25 with the use of adult seat belts.
  • At 100 percent child safety seat use for children under age 5, an estimated 323 lives (that is, an additional 79) could have been saved in 2008.
  • From 1975 through 2008, an estimated 8,959 lives were saved by child restraints (child safety seats or adult seat belts).

To aid our customers we have asked the Tinton Falls Police Department to come by the dealerships. They conduct safety seat inspections to make sure your seat is the right size, structurally sound, and installed correctly. We will have refreshments and surprises for the kids!

They will be at World Volkswagen on Saturday 9-25-2010 from 9 am to 1 pm.

Volkswagen sheds light where others don't

Volkswagen Group Research staff members work together with the Development departments from the Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda brands as well as scientists from the Institute of Computer Graphics at the TU Braunschweig. Determining the psychological effect of light on the driver is part of the basic research. This knowledge is incorporated in the development of a simulation tool for virtual night driving, which is able to portray realistically how, among other things, oncoming traffic is blinded by headlights. New light functions are then implemented in test vehicles as a prototype for the road tests.

Prof. Dr Jürgen Leohold, Head of Volkswagen Group Research, commented that “the vision behind these activities is to fully achieve adaptive light distribution, which will in future automatically adjust to all driving situations and eventualities, thus continually ensuring optimum vision and visibility in the vehicle. Our aim is to further sharpen the Volkswagen Group’s competitive edge in the area of innovative lighting technologies. We are currently developing our skills in this important and strategic field of research in order to allow the coming years to deliver more surprises”.

The lighting technology known as “headlight range control”, as well as the “dynamic light assist” which has been introduced in the Volkswagen Touareg, originated in Volkswagen Group Research.

By using the “dynamic light assist” around the world in the new Touareg and Phaeton vehicle models, Volkswagen features innovative lighting technology’s high-end solution. The “dynamic light assist” is an entirely new dynamic main beam control system. It makes it possible to drive with the main beam left on without blinding oncoming traffic or drivers ahead of you. A camera on the interior mirror detects the exact position of the other road users; the masking function in each headlight is then separately activated electronically and the headlight main beams are slightly dimmed for the relevant area. As a result, the road illumination in general is improved. The “dynamic light assist” provides the means for a completely new feel for light, always optimally matched to the traffic situation.

Isn't science grand?

VW Donates 4 Jetta Sport Wagons to Law Enforcement

With the County Commission’s blessing and appreciation, Volkswagen of America has added a double case of “fahrvergneugen” (German for the joy of driving) to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department. It is reported that during Thursday morning’s commission meeting the commissioners voted unanimously to authorize County Mayor Claude Ramsey to accept two Jetta station wagons from the one of the county’s newest residents. The vehicles will be assigned to traffic enforcement and, according to Mayor Ramsey, should maintain a high profile on the roads throughout the area.

Volkswagen also donated two of the vehicles to the Chattanooga Police Department, which are valued at $28,000 each.

Volkswagen to Debut Hybrid Beetle

Recently there's been some buzz around the Beetle that runs on poo, or "Dung Beetle" as some have dubbed it. Nifty idea, but hardly something the general public would get into as far as a greener vehicle option. No worries, Volkswagen has been stirring it's environmentally friendly pot and came up with a more sterile solution: a hybrid Beetle!!

Autocar reports that VW is planning a "radical design" for the next-generation bug, set to debut at next year's Detroit auto show. The redesign will include a hybrid Beetle with a drivetrain resembling what was seen on the New Compact Coupe concept at this year's Detroit show--a lithium-ion battery pack, 20 kilowatt electric motor with a li-ion battery pack, 177 horsepower, 110 pound-feet of torque, and an average of 45 miles per gallon. The hybrid Beetle may not match those numbers exactly, but chances are it will come close.

The Beetle isn't the only upcoming electric option from VW. Aside from the already-unveiled hybrid Touareg, VW plans to release a hybrid Jetta in 2012 as well as an all-electric Golf in 2013. For the most part, though, VW is sticking with the clean diesel vehicles that it knows best.

Report: Volkswagen Gives the Green Light to a BlueSport Roadster

The Eos isn't Volkswagen's most popular model, but a meaner, performance-oriented droptop may be just what its consumers are looking for. A new report suggests the BlueSport roadster has been given the ok for production.

First seen at the 2009 North American International Auto Show, the BlueSport was depicted by VW as the comeback of the compact roadster. Sources at Auto Express have received confirmation from VW that the two-door sportster is indeed in the final stages of development and has been given the go-ahead for production. According to the source, designers haven't strayed from the concept's muscular look.

As it name suggests, the BlueSport will follow VW's trend of offering eco-friendly technologies. The car will likely feature stop/start technology along with regenerative braking. VW installed its 180-horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine in the rear-drive roadster concept; its combination of frugality (55 mpg) and rapidity (0 to 60 in 6.2 seconds) dispelled myths that diesels have to be slow. When the production convertible premieres, we expect a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 gasoline engine, followed shortly after by a 1.4-liter twin-charged I-4.

Similar to what we saw some 18 months ago, the BlueSport borrows some styling trends from other VW offerings, namely the Scirocco and Golf, but a set of LED foglights and wide stance remind us of the Audi R8. To keep the car light, VW is poised to offer a manually operated folding cloth roof. In addition, an ultralight aluminum chassis will be used to help keep weight to near 2600 pounds.

We expect to see the BlueSport on our lot sometime between 2012 and 2013, with pricing presumed to start around $30,000.
