VOLKSWAGEN PARTNERS WITH BIKES BELONG TO CREATE CLEAN, SAFE BIKING COMMUNITIES NATIONWIDE

1.26.2012

New two-year sponsorship will support key bicycling projects as part of Volkswagen’s Think Blue.® initiative to promote sustainable mobility and environmentally conscious lifestyles

Herndon, VA -  At the Washington Auto Show today, Volkswagen of America, Inc. (VWoA) and the Bikes Belong Foundation, the nation’s leading advocacy organization for biking, announced a new two-year partnership to help develop biking-friendly communities, foster healthy lifestyles and create a cleaner environment. VWoA will donate vehicles and funding to support three core Bikes Belong advocacy and urban planning initiatives: Peopleforbikes.org, Safe Routes to School National Partnership (SRTSNP) and Bicycling Design Best Practices.

“Volkswagen’s commitment to environmental sustainability extends beyond our fuel-efficient vehicles and company practices,” said Jonathan Browning, president and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America. “We are extremely proud to be partnering with Bikes Belong to encourage biking and ensure that people of all ages can safely share the road, saving fuel and reducing pollution and traffic congestion.”

The sponsorship is part of Volkswagen’s Think Blue.® initiative, which encompasses all of the company’s efforts to promote eco-friendly mobility and encourage environmentally conscious behavior. The Bikes Belong Foundation partnership also aligns with Volkswagen’s long-term commitment to encourage active lifestyles by endorsing cycling, running and triathlon events.

“We are thrilled to have a strong partner in Volkswagen, an innovative, forward-thinking automotive company that shares our commitment to sustainable mobility,” said Bruno Maier, vice president, Bikes Belong. “We are looking forward to this joint venture to help create safer roads for all people and help raise awareness of bicycling as a viable, eco-friendly mode of transportation.”

The partnership between Volkswagen and the Bikes Belong Foundation focuses on improving bicycling through advocacy, urban planning and strategic design across the three primary programs:

  • Peopleforbikes.org: Launched in 2010, Peopleforbikes.org is a movement to unite one million bicyclists of all riding abilities to urge policy makers to endorse cost-effective legislation that improves bike paths, lanes and trails nationwide. VWoA will provide four vehicles for a nationwide “road campaign” to encourage Americans to sign this pledge in support of bicycling and healthy lifestyles.
  • Safe Routes to School National Partnership (SRTSNP): VWoA’s funding will help bolster efforts to create safe opportunities for children to walk and bicycle to school, while also tackling critical issues related to health, traffic congestion, public safety and the environment.
  • Bicycling Design Best Practices: The program aims to create more bike-friendly communities across the United States by helping cities adapt the world’s best bike facility models, policies and state-of-the-art designs. VWoA will sponsor workshops and study tours to help implement proven projects that enhance the bicycling experience.

Cars.com Names Volkswagen Passat Best of 2012

CHICAGO, Jan. 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2012 Volkswagen Passat has been named Cars.com's "Best of 2012," the online automotive site announced tonight during its annual awards show gala during the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. More than 1,500 auto industry executives attended the celebration at the Fillmore Detroit, which included a private performance by Grammy Award-winning Maroon 5.

"The completely redesigned Volkswagen Passat shook up the extremely competitive family sedan category in 2012," said Patrick Olsen, Cars.com editor-in-chief. "The Passat's ability to take on these long-standing family sedan leaders along with its great price and standard features makes the Passat our best car for 2012."

Six vehicles were nominated for the "Best of 2012" award. They were the 2012 Audi A7, 2012 Hyundai Accent, 2012 Hyundai Veloster, 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, 2012 Subaru Impreza and the 2012 Volkswagen Passat.

"Our editors drove and evaluated more than 65 new 2012 models and the competition was steep," said Olsen. "Narrowing down the list of great vehicles to six was no easy feat, and just being a finalist is a special honor. Drivers should be proud to have any car on this list."

World Volkswagen Dealership Coming to Route 37 East

For many years, a staple observation of a cruise down Route 37 in Toms River has been the sight of automobile dealerships of almost every major make on the market. That lineup is due to welcome a new addition to Route 37 East, next to Tiffany’s, in the form of World Volkswagen.

According to Toms River Township Planner Jay Lynch, several of the variance applications that have come before township officials in the prior year have been from Lester Glenn dealers, in addition to ones from Gateway Toyota, Pine Belt Nissan, and this one from Volkswagen.

“It seems car dealers like to be located near each other, for when prospective customers go car shopping. When people go out, they want to come to a place where they can see a lot of cars in one general location,” Lynch commented. “Toms River is becoming an attractive area for this particular type of business.”
Lynch said that he had seen a similar pattern of automobile dealerships choosing to be located in a similar area in both Manahawkin and Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

“The industry has spawned this trend among many (car) dealers,” Lynch noted.

Lynch commented that automobile dealerships are “attractive businesses” which benefit other ones nearby such as restaurants and the like – insomuch that people who come out to look for a car often spend several hours on that task, and they will likely stick around for a meal or other forms of business or entertainment in the area.

“Ratables are stabilized with successful businesses, and car dealers don’t have peak hours like employment centers do. In other words, people aren’t shopping for cars during daily rush hours – they’re usually shopping on their off-hours, so it’s a great use for business that is off peak hours,” Lynch explained.

Author: Faye Sunderland, December 29, 2011
Filed under: Volkswagen

Car giant, has set itself an ambitious target of making its plants more sustainable by cutting their environmental impact by 25 per cent by 2018.

The car maker’s factories must reduce their energy consumption, waste volumes, air-borne , water consumption and carbon dioxide to meet the target which will compare performance in 2010 to 2018. Part of the brand’s ‘’ environmental strategy, all the brand’s passenger car plants will be expected to meet the sustainability goal.

"Through the growing efficiency and productivity of our plants, the Volkswagen brand is already making a key contribution to the achievements of Group strategic targets for 2018. However, we are going a step further: by 2018, we intend to make at all our plants 25 per cent more environmentally compatible," said Hubert Waltl, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand with responsibility for and Logistics.

"Sustainable, efficient production is a clear competitive advantage," added Prof. Werner Neubauer, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen brand with responsibility for Components. "With its "Think Blue. Factory." Initiative, the Volkswagen brand is pursuing a clear strategy which pools all environmental activities at our plants throughout the world. Our ambitious targets for sustainable vehicle production have now been defined in a way which is clear and comprehensible for our customers."

The ‘Think Blue. Factory’  includes key measures in the area of vehicle production. The programme, which is concerned with efficiency improvements in production addresses all employees at the plants. In future, approaches for reducing energy consumption in production will be honoured by the Volkswagen Energy Cup at an annual ‘Think Blue. Factory’ day.

Only a few weeks ago, the new Volkswagen plant at Chattanooga, Tennessee, was the first automobile factory worldwide to receive platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. Platinum certification confirms compliance with the most demanding standards for sustainable, environmentally compatible production.
